Cuba received the first batch of group tourists from China since the COVID-19 pandemic on Monday.

In February, China resumed outbound group travel to 20 countries, including Cuba.

Elizabeth Vela Jaime, the tourism counselor of the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) in the Asia-Pacific region said that her country intends to double the number of Chinese visitors in the short term. Cuba has increased its efforts in promoting its attractions in nature, culture, health and nautical tourism, among others.

SOUNDBITE (Spanish): ELIZABETH VELA JAIME, Tourism counselor of the Cuban Ministry of Tourism (Mintur) in the Asia-Pacific region (01:37-02:05)
"The reception is great. They (people from China) feel attracted to Cuba, and there is a very good perception in terms of Cuba as a tourist destination. In Cuba, the Chinese do not just see sun and surf, they also understand and see that it is a country of history, culture and heritage, they feel very identified with the Cuban people. Especially for the young people who are looking to explore other places besides Europe or Southeast Asia."

Between 2010 and 2019, the number of Chinese tourists in Cuba increased by around 23 percent annually, according to data from Mintur.
