"Hello, this is Zhu Cong with Xinhua News Agency. I'm now at Drepung Monastery in Lhasa, the capital of southwest China's Tibet Autonomous Region, as today, the city kicks off the annual Shoton Festival, with a large Thangka painting of the Buddha on display. And the event will begin in about 3 hours."
The Shoton Festival, also known as the Yogurt Banquet Festival, is a week-long extravaganza that dates back to the 11th century.
The Drepung Monastery is the largest monastery of the Gelug School of Tibetan Buddhism.

"Now we have entered the Main Hall of the monastery. Right behind me is the place where the huge Thangka painting is stored. As we can see, the monks are busy preparing to move the huge Thangka painting from the great hall to the exhibition stage."
Many locals have joined in carrying and placing the Thangka on the exhibition platform on the hilltop.

"Right behind me is the exhibition stage. We can see the monks up the hill are waiting for the arrival of the huge Thangka painting of the Buddha."
The huge painting was slowly unrolled at around 8 a.m.
The figure displayed this year is called "Jamba," or Maitreya, symbolizing amiability and kindness.
People gathered at the platform in excitement and admiration, throwing hada scarves at the painting.

"I made this trip from Chengdu to Lhasa specially for the Shoton Festival. With the occasion, we pray for the strength of our country, the prosperity of the people, and also the happiness for everyone."
