Rubber ducky riot: Charity race in Reno turns wild as ducks escape, float to Pyramid Lake
Reno, Nevada's annual duck race charity event took an unexpected turn on Saturday, August 12. Held to support the local humane society, the event kicked off around 2 pm with trucks dumping rubber ducks into the river to start the race. But what began as a good-hearted competition soon became a ducky debacle.
"The first clip of the video shows the trucks dumping the rubber ducks into the river to start the race," said the filmer. Tragically, the situation unraveled when "the gate at the end of the race broke open and let hundreds if not thousands of ducks past the collection gate, and they went rogue to float all the way to our local pyramid lake here in Nevada."
Despite valiant efforts by firefighters attempting to hold the fence, as seen in the video clip, the last two parts of the footage reveal the extent of the escaping ducks. The event concluded with a rubbery wave of chaos, leaving the local authorities with an unplanned, sprawling clean-up operation.
"The local news said it may take weeks to clean up," added the filmer. The incident has left the community bemused, and will likely be remembered for its unintended consequences rather than its charitable intentions.
