This is the shocking moment a huge rat was spotted in a coffee shop in front of horrified tourists visiting famously clean Japan.

Holidaymaker Jao Frost and his friends were waiting for their food to arrive when the large rodent plunged from the ceiling of the cafe in Umeda District, Osaka, on August 7.

Footage shows the filthy pest, unable to move from the fall, lying behind diners, who appeared to pay it no mind.

A cafe employee later arrived with a broom and dustpan to calmly scoop the creature up.

Jao said: 'While waiting for our orders, I noticed something fall from the ceiling in my peripheral vision. It turned out to be a rat, and I was the first to notice due to its proximity to our table.

'Surprisingly, everyone remained calm and collected, possibly due to the rat being injured. Instead of fear, we felt sympathy for the creature.

'After about 10 minutes, the staff used a dustpan to remove the rat and apologised for the incident.

'Despite the unexpected situation, the food and drinks were delicious, and I look forward to returning!'

Japan prides itself on politeness and tidiness and has a long history of cleaning traditions, which are believed to sweep away ill fortune and evil spirits.

Cleaning up trash is seen as a citizen's duty and is instilled in school pupils from an early age.

Japan's fastidiousness with good hygiene has also endeared the country to other nations.

In November 2022, Japanese football fans were praised when they tidied up a stadium following a World Cup match in Qatar.

Japanese author Marie Kondo has also become famous worldwide for her best-selling books on housekeeping and organisation.
