This is the uplifting moment an injured monitor lizard was rescued from a canal in Thailand.

The large 5ft-long reptile was spotted by locals on the river banks with a rope tied around its neck in Pathum Thani province, Thailand, on July 12.

Footage shows a resident luring the creature to the edge, where there was a stairway so he could climb down and help the animal.

The lizard was scared, so he draped a cloth onto its eyes and cut the rope using a knife before releasing it into the water.
