A ship that accommodated 14 people on the Johor Malaysia-Pulau Rupat route, Bengkalis, sank in the waters of the Malacca Strait, Tuesday (15/8/2023) early morning.

The head of the Pekanbaru National SAR office, Budi Cahyadi, said the ship sank in the waters of the Malacca Strait with coordinates 02°00'41.48" N 102°00'221.86" E and PD TW 0815 1045 G Kmv

"Currently we have managed to evacuate 11 people, while 3 other passengers are still being searched," he said.

Budi said that his party deployed Rescue Boot 218 with 12 crew members to the location.
He explained, the incident occurred at 05.00 WIB in the morning due to bad weather.

"According to information reported to us, the incident occurred at 05.00 WIB, early in the morning. The sinking was suspected to be due to bad weather. We deployed rescue boot 218 with 12 crew members to the location," explained Budi.

The 11 victims who survived were traumatized, so they had to receive medical treatment in Malacca, Malaysia. "They are in a traumatized state and are still in hospital in Malacca," he concluded.
