Dozens of flights were cancelled as a storm battered planes and flooded the runway at Frankfurt Airport in Germany.

Footage shows a jet being hit by strong wind and a Lufthansa Airbus A320 plane parked on the tarmac, surrounded by water during a thunderstorm on August 16.

An airport spokesman said around 70 flights were cancelled and more than 23 arrivals were diverted due to the heavy rain and flood. Ground handling was also suspended for more than two hours, the spokesperson added.

The airport estimated more than 1,000 passengers were affected.

The German Weather Service had forecasted thunderstorms to hit Hesse state on Wednesday evening.
