STORYLINE:
The 15th BRICS Summit will take place in Johannesburg, South Africa from Aug. 22 to 24, which will be the first in-person BRICS gathering since the COVID-19 pandemic.
The BRICS is a group of major emerging economies, namely Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.
Altogether, the BRICS nations account for more than 40 percent of the world population and about 26 percent of the global economy.
SOUNDBITE 1 (English): STEPHEN NDEGWA, Int'l relations lecturer, United States International University-Africa (USIU-Africa)
"The BRICS is going to be the foundation of developing countries. And as they develop, as they put more effort in infrastructure, in interconnectivity, in employment, in the environment, we expect that it's going to be more cooperation within developing countries."
SOUNDBITE 2 (English): WILLIAM JONES, Washington bureau chief of U.S. publication Executive Intelligence Review
"I think the development of the BRICS Summit now is tremendous. It has shown that this is no longer an organization that represents, first of all, five countries, or six, or seven or eight. But it really represents potentially, the developing world, the 'Global South.'
Just look at the figures of international trade and investment, the BRICS is playing a much more important role, a much bigger role in the world economy."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): RONNIE LINS, Director of China-Brazil Center for Research and Business, Brazil
"In recent years, given the troubled world context, the positioning of the BRICS on essential issues has helped to consolidate paths that have contributed to creating very global conditions.
Concerning global stability, the propositions of multilateralist policies and the implementation of quality development resulted in a series of positive economic actions and those related to the environment."
SOUNDBITE 4 (Spanish): EDUARDO REGALADO, Senior researcher of International Policy Research Center of Cuba
"The exchanges between the BRICS countries, the proposals of the BRICS, the New Development Bank (NDB), and the BRICS financing mechanism are continuously benefiting the emerging economies and the developing economies."
