Sri Lankan Prime Minister Dinesh Gunawardena has said that his country has benefited a lot from the China-proposed Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), saying that China is seeking cooperation for peace and development.
The prime minister made the remarks in an interview with Xinhua during the ongoing seventh China-South Asia Expo in Kunming, capital of China's Yunnan Province.

"The Belt and Road Initiative proposed by China is a big great change to the entire economies of our countries.
The next planning procedures (of BRI projects in Sri Lanka) have already started, to move further into the Hambantota industrial zone and also other service facilities that are being upgraded so that the port would be accessed more by trade and investment.
Similarly, in Colombo Port City, it is in the capital of Sri Lanka, very key and important place. The process has started. Most of the initial foundations have been clearly completed.
It's an important center that will develop with all the financial and other investments taken into a new era of development.
I would say an economic giant like China has been opening and supporting other nations also, to raise from difficulties of economic difficulties, for peace and development."
The prime minister also spoke highly of the cooperation between Yunnan and Sri Lankan provinces.

"Yunnan Province governor has visited us. And we signed memorandum of understanding (MOU) on various projects, research and cooperation for development, especially with Eastern Province of Sri Lanka. Those are the future development areas of what is mentioned.
In agriculture, Yunnan has agreed to work with Sri Lanka on a high-yielding miracle rice harvest, and investment in projects that are for agriculture, renewable energy, digital economy, with the province of Yunnan."
