Newly-built power tower erupts in flames and crumbles in northern China
A desulfurization tower at the Huafu Thermal Power Plant caught fire and dramatically crumbled in half in northern China.
Dramatic video filmed in Dandong City in Liaoning Province on August 18 shows billowing flames erupting from the chimney of the tower, with the inferno causing the structural steel at the base to deform, leading to its eventual collapse.
Eyewitness Mr Chen recounted the terrifying events, stating that the blaze ignited between 10:00 and 11:00 in the morning. Thankfully, firefighters were swift in their response and managed to quell the flames.
Chen added that the affected building was only constructed last year and was still incomplete. Due to its location in a relatively open area, the fire didn't pose a significant threat to the nearby residents, and there were no reports of any casualties.
By the afternoon of the 18th, authorities from Yuanbao District's Emergency Department in Dandong City confirmed that the fire had been extinguished and, reassuringly, there were no reported injuries.
The cause of the fire remains under investigation as relevant departments continue their work on the scene.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
