STORYLINE:
India's Cabinet, led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, has given the green light to a sustainable urban mobility initiative called PM-eBus Sewa. The approved plan, valued at 576 billion Indian rupees (around 6.9 billion U.S. dollars), intends to boost the adoption of electric buses in 169 cities.
Anurag Thakur, the Union Minister for Sports, Youth Affairs, and Information and Broadcasting, announced the allocation of funds for the rollout of approximately 10,000 new electric buses. The program will be focused on cities currently lacking organized bus services as well as those with a population of 300,000 or more, including the capital cities of Union Territories, northeastern states, and hilly areas.
As part of the scheme, the electric buses will be made available for a period of 10 years, alongside the development of charging infrastructure in 181 cities.
This initiative, known as PM-eBus Sewa, marks a significant stride in the government's objective of deploying 50,000 electric buses by 2030. It is aligned with the National Electric Mobility Mission Plan, targeting a 40% penetration of electric buses by 2030.
