STORYLINE:

A senior official with the New Development Bank (NDB) has hailed the bank's impressive achievements under the BRICS mechanism over the past eight years.

Headquartered in China's Shanghai, the NDB was established by Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa (BRICS) in 2015. It's aimed at mobilizing resources for infrastructure and sustainable development projects in BRICS and other emerging economies.

"NDB is one of the youngest multilateral development banks in the world. Within a short span of 8 years, NDB has established itself as a major global, multilateral development bank. We have more than 33 billion U.S. dollars in approved loans to nearly a hundred projects in our member countries. And all these projects have a strong component of sustainable development goals and climate goals. That's a very strong achievement. On the funding side as well, we have raised, apart from our own capital, nearly 16 billion U.S. dollars from the markets."

Kishora also highlighted the importance of the upcoming BRICS summit in Johannesburg for the NDB development.

"Through this summit, we get to know what the priorities are, what the leaders think, how they want to shape their own economies, how they want to shape their own social systems, how they want to develop their own technologies, etc. This understanding is very important for us to fine tune our own approaches and policies.
In terms of knowledge and innovation, which is very critical if we have to address the two issues of sustainable development goals and climate change, it's really important. So from that perspective, we have been bringing together stakeholders and holding consultations to engage with them, so that we can come up with plans which can be executed, which can lead to mitigate the challenges."
