Passengers stranded on trains at London Stansted Airport amid power outage
A power outage at London Stansted Airport on Sunday afternoon caused widespread disruption, with passengers stranded on trains and planes.
The airport railway station was evacuated after its fire alarms went off and trains were unable to run to or from the airport. Passengers were also stuck on planes on the tarmac.
The airport spokesman said that restrictions were put in place on arriving passengers to prevent further overcrowding in the terminal.
The cause of the power outage is not yet known. Emergency services were at the railway station, but no fire was found. A burnt switch in an electrical room was found.
The airport said that power had been restored to most of the airport, but that some systems were still being rebooted. Passengers were advised to check with their airlines for the status of their flights.
The power outage came at a busy time for Stansted Airport, with many people traveling for the summer holidays. The airport is expecting to handle over 29 million passengers this year.
