STORYLINE:

Welcome to the world of robots, master.
Is it a dream?

STANDUP 1 (English): SUNNY ZHOU, Xinhua correspondent
"Nope. This is a real world of robots."

In the field, in tune, in depth.
This is Sunny's Spotlight, from the 2023 World Robot Conference (WRC 2023).

STANDUP 2 (English): SUNNY ZHOU, Xinhua correspondent
"The 2023 World Robot Conference is underway here in Beijing. More than 600 sets of robots are being displayed.
For the first time, the entire venue is organized into 10 major application scenarios under the 'Robotics +' concept, namely agriculture, manufacturing, energy, healthcare, elderly services, trade and logistics, and so on.
They provide insight into how diverse industries can become more intelligent and advanced through integration with digital technologies."

Today, breakthroughs in information technology, biotechnology, and materials technology, among others, have allowed the robotics industries to wing the way to a new era.
With immense innovative application-oriented momentum, almost all walks of life are embracing an unprecedented transformation.

When smart robots replace the labor force in agriculture, it generates high efficiency and quality.
An orchard harvesting robot has made the debut of its kind at the exhibition.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): LI TAO, Senior engineer, National Research Center of Intelligent Equipment for Agriculture
"Our robot is a multi-arm orchard picking robot that combines four-arm coordination and stereo vision."

With the advanced stereoscopic vision system, the robot can not only see the apple, but also locate the apple. It can even have a clear "eyesight" at night, and therefore work around the clock.
The robot also learns to twist the apple off by imitating the hand movements of the fruit farmer, which keeps the fruit in intact appearance.
Moreover, the cost of the entire hardware might be reduced to 150,000 yuan (around 20,584 U.S. dollars), a practical advantage for market promotion.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LI TAO, Senior engineer, National Research Center of Intelligent Equipment for Agriculture
"China has been the top exporter of apples in the past 30 years, so in fact, the prospect and application demand of picking robots are very large."

The emergence of surgical robotic systems has entirely changed the way of many surgeries.
Instead of being engrossed on the operating table, surgeons are able to observe and operate on the lesion via a laparoscope and nimble robotic arms.

SOUNDBITE 3 (Chinese): YAN ZHIYUAN, General manager, Harbin Sagebot Intelligent Medical Equipment Co., LTD.
"The biggest feature of the endoscopic surgery robot is that it is very accurate, and it will be very dexterous when operating, and it can correspond with the natural shaking of the human hand, which can greatly improve the quality of the operation performed by doctors, to let patients recover faster, and effectively control the amount of bleeding during the operation."

Thanks to the network communication technology, especially the 5G technology, the patient can get treatment via the system thousands of miles away from the surgeon.

SOUNDBITE 4 (Chinese): YAN ZHIYUAN, General manager, Harbin Sagebot Intelligent Medical Equipment Co., LTD.
"We have done a number of remote surgeries, including some cross-continent surgeries.
In the remote surgery operation between Beijing and Hainan, it is not easy to overcome various influences on communication through undersea cable lines, it requires a lot of technical support to ensure the safety and precision of surgical robots during the real-time operation, and we have achieved success."

In coming years, Chinese tech companies are venturing into human-like robotics in an attempt to cash in on the huge market opportunities.
Sci-fi films make us familiar with humanoid robots. But you may get stunned learning how difficult it is to make real functioning ones.
Among more than a dozen humanoid showpieces, many eyes were on Dataa's Cloud Ginger, which facilitates the company's smart cloud technology.

SOUNDBITE 5 (Chinese): CHEN YUAN, Vice president, Dataa Robotics
"To make a good pair of robot hands, you need two things, a strong enough processing unit, and very flexible joints.
Everyone's attention now has switched from simple functional robots to complex AI robots that can really bring services to people."

Next episode, valuable insights are shared by industry insiders with Sunny's Spotlight at WRC 2023. Stay tuned with Xinhua.
