Convalescent Hospital Building Catches Fire Threatening Multiple Patients Housed in Nearby Apartments

HEMET, CA - On 8/20/2023 at about 7:30 pm Hemet Fire Department responded to multiple reports of a commercial structure fire with explosions at the Meadowbrook convalescent hospital at 461 E Johnston Avenue Hemet, CA . Arriving crews located a building in the middle of the hospital complex fully involved. The fire was spreading rapidly to multiple trees and to nearby apartment buildings on both sides of the structure that were full of convalescent patients and elderly many of which did not have the ability to move without assistance. Firefighters initiated an aggressive fire attack and knocked the fire down in about 10-15 minutes. A search was conducted, and no victims were located in what appeared to be a vacant building being used as a storage area. The cause of the fire is unknown at this time and under investigation.
