A brave zebra survived a crocodile attack only to be hunted down by an opportunistic lion waiting on the riverbank.

Antony Ketikai, 37, was leading a tour along the Mara River, Kenya, on August 13 when he spotted the black and white animal struggling in the water.

Dramatic footage captured the tail of a crocodile barely emerge from the surface as the zebra clung on for dear life during its aquatic attack.

Having valiantly escaped to dry land, the injured zebra tried to hide behind some grass but was unable to escape a waiting lion who brought it down quickly.

Antony, owner of Ilmuran Eco Camp, said: “The zebra battled on valiantly for almost a whole hour before succumbing to the second attack.

“The zebra had been drinking water and intended to cross the river when the crocodile grabbed a hold of one of its legs.

“The zebra turned aggressive and began to bite the crocodile’s face until it gave up and realised it had to let him to go.

“The lion was hidden on the other side of the river waiting for zebras to cross. It was just lucky enough that he saw a badly injured one which was very easy prey.

“I was a bit sympathetic to zebra but I knew it is nature taking its course so it was best of luck to lion.”
