Filipino locals pan for gold in remote mountain streams
Footage shows how Filipino locals panned for gold in remote mountain streams.
Melody Rezani and her neighbours scooped soil and rocks from the river and sifted it for the precious metal in Davao de Oro, the Philippines.
Footage shows one of the small-scale miners smashing a rock into pieces and pulverising on a deep, bowl-shaped frying pan on June 23.
They rinsed it off with water and poured chemical mercury to obtain bits of gold, repeating the process until they collected a little nugget.
The nugget was then heated to purify it and weighed on a scale, ready to be sold to jewellers and buyers.
Gold panning is a method of extracting gold from a deposit - usually sand, gravel, or silt - using a pan. The gold is typically found in the form of flakes or nuggets.
