American tourist apologises over Ghostbusters style gun blowing cannabis over people
A brash American tourist has apologised for blasting revellers with clouds of cannabis smoke on the popular Thai holiday island of Phuket.
Angkhan Vorac Chhieng (corr) used his Ghostbusters-style 'weed blower' to douse other tourists with intoxicating marijuana vapour as he walked along the busy Bangla Road on August 18.
Footage of his inconsiderate antics spread online, sparking an investigation by the Phuket Provincial Police.
Police Colonel Sujin Nilabadee of the Patong Police Station said officers gathered CCTV footage and managed to track down the American national, who was made to apologise on video.
Caught by authorities, a sheepish Angkhan appeared on camera saying: 'Sorry, I'd like to apologise to Phuket. I love Thailand. It was a misunderstanding. No problem. Thank you. Sorry. Very sorry.'
Angkhan said that he had used the cannabis blower to make promotional videos for his marijuana business, adding he regretted the harm done to Phuket's reputation as a tourist destination.
Police said he had landed at Suvarnabhumi Airport on August 15, and was staying at a hotel on Bangla Road. He has now left in disgrace on Vietjet Flight VZ310 on August 19.
In a statement, the Phuket Provincial Police suggested they would blacklist the troublemaker.
They said: 'Notifications have been sent to the Immigration Office and the Phuket Provincial Public Health Office directing them to take appropriate action within their areas of jurisdiction.'
Following the incident, Patong police, local authorities, public health officers, and volunteers conducted inspections of cannabis sellers along Bangla Road on August 20.
They checked for proper licenses and sales permits to ensure the decriminalised substance was not distributed to minors, pregnant women, and people under 20.
Authorities said no violations were found.
Cannabis was de-listed as a banned narcotic in Thailand in June last year, leading to an eruption of neon-lit shops offering the drug around the country.
Bungling Thai authorities are now scrambling to regulate its use as officials report a rising number of marijuana addictions per month.
The Ministry of Public Health said an average of 72 marijuana addiction cases per month was recorded in the first half of 2022. After cannabis was effectively legalised, the number nearly quadrupled to 282 monthly cases from June to November 2022 alone.
