An elephant calf was rescued after it fell into a well in eastern India's West Bengal.

This incident took place in Bhuruchati village under the Kalaikunda range forest of Kharagpur division, West Midnapore district on August 21.

Visuals showed the process of rescuing the elephant underway. The elephant calf, aged one year, walked about in the muddy pit it had fallen into with people surrounding the area. With it being dark, the rescue operation became a bit tougher. However the forest officials did not give up and used an excavator to dig out the well and make a route for the pachyderm to come out. The operation lasted for five long hours after which the elephant could finally be taken out of the well which was eight metres deep.

What was better was that it was rescued without any injuries. As per a report, this happened when the elephant, part of a herd of 22, was moving from the Kalaikunda range to Manikpara range. The calf was reunited with its mother and they went into a nearby forest. Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Shivanand Ram said that the team reached the spot with the necessary equipment to rescue the elephant. The mother elephant too took part in the rescue operation trying to pull out her calf with the help of her trunk.

However, they had to ensure that the mother elephant was kept at a distance to smoothly conduct this rescue operation.
