A newborn baby girl was found alive dumped among rocks under a bridge in Indonesia.

The infant was naked, pale, and still had her umbilical cord attached when she was discovered by several youngsters who were playing next to a river in the Pesisir Selatan District in West Sumatra province, on August 21.

The children told other older villagers, who reported the discovery to the police and rushed to rescue the baby.

Footage shows the locals clearing away the bed of stones on which the baby was left. They wrapped the crying foundling in a blanket to keep it warm.

Authorities said the baby was found in an area far from residential areas in Penadah Mudik Village.

Inspector Aldius, Head of Balai Ampek Basa Sector Police, said: 'This female baby was found alive and placed on a rock without a single piece of clothing.

'We are still finding out about the parents or perpetrators of this baby disposal. Their identities are not yet known. Abandoned a baby like this is a crime.'

The baby is now safe and has been taken to a nearby community health centre for check-ups. She will be put in an orphanage if authorities are unable to return her to her family.

Inspector Aldius added: 'We really hope for the community's cooperation. If there is a person suspected to be the child's mother, they can report her to us first. Let us investigate, so that it is revealed who the parents of this baby are.'
