Protesters erupted today amid anger over plans to release water contaminated with radioactive material from the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant into the ocean.

Sixteen demonstrators were arrested outside the Japanese Embassy in Seoul, South Korea, where they tried to force their way into the embassy building but were stopped by police.

A similar rally was held outside the offices of the Fukushima company in Tokyo, seen in the video.

The groups said they were protesting against the Japanese government's 'dangerous' decision with 'serious consequences for the environment and human health' to release the water into the Pacific.

'We are here to say that we will not accept Japan's decision to release this contaminated water into the ocean,' said one of the protesters in Seoul.

'This is a reckless decision that could have devastating consequences.'

An earthquake in March 2011 caused a loss of power at the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, which led to the meltdown of three of the plant's reactors. The meltdowns released large amounts of radioactive material into the environment, forcing the evacuation of over 150,000 people from the surrounding area.

It was the most severe nuclear disaster since the Chernobyl disaster in Ukraine in 1986.
