The charred remains of wild animals were found in acres of land left decimated by wildfires in the Evros region of Greece.

Footage from August 25 shows the devastating aftermath of fires in the Dadia forest and Kirki mountain forests.

Carcasses of tortoises, lizards, and snakes can be seen in the heartbreaking footage.

A solar farm was also impacted by the blaze with several panels burnt and melted by the flames.

Europe’s summer fires have removed wooded areas capable of absorbing 2.3 million tonnes of carbon dioxide a year - Wildfires in Greece are raging for the seventh day, with 20 lives lost so far. More than 120,000 hectares of land have burned across Greece in 2023 up until Wednesday according to the National Observatory of Athens

Footage filmed in the Evros region of northern Greece (Dadia forest and Kirki mountain forests), shows entire mountains turned black as the forests that once covered them vanished. The video features burned animals, including turtles and snakes as the toll was heavy on wildlife. Thousands of animals and reptile species burned alive while the fire swept through their natural environment.

At the end of the video, the imprint of the disaster can be seen in energy production units and agriculture in the area. Solar farms and beehives lay in ruins. The effects of the destruction of the forests of Evros will have immediate and long-term consequences on the economy of the region which is based on agricultural production and the exploitation of forest resources.
