A dust devil phenomenon swept through the Arjuna Dieng temple complex in Banjarnegara regency, Central Java province, Indonesia.

The incident, which occurred last Sunday (20 August), became a spectacle for tourists.

As the whirlwind grew, the tourists seemed undaunted, even filming the whirlwind, which has now gone viral on social media.

Jafar Snyu, the tourist who filmed the moment, said the arrival of the dust devil was unexpected.

"It lasted for a while, then it disappeared. We dodged as the dust approached and then it gone," Jafar added.

There appeared to be no sign of panic, suggesting the phenomenon is a regular occurrence in the area.

Eka Ardenti, a meteorological and geophysical observer at the Banjarnegara Meteorology, Climatology and Geophysics Agency (BMKG), said the tornado-like wind phenomenon that occurred at the Arjuna Dieng temple complex was due to the surface of the ground heating up compared to the surrounding area.

The dust devil does not cause any damage or adverse effects, but tourists are advised to move away immediately if a dust devil appears.
