Watch Thailand's spiciest salad being made... with thousands of chillis mixed with tomatoes
Watch Thailand's spiciest salad being made... with thousands of chills mixed with tomatoes.
Footage shows 2kg of chopped-up Bird's eye chillis, which each measure up to 100,000 Scoville units, being poured onto a large wooden mortar in Bangkok on August 22.
The Thai variety that is hotter than jalapeno was pounded with other ingredients such as tomatoes, shrimp with shells on, lime juice, and fish sauce.
The mixture was used as the strongly-flavoured dressing to the salad locally called ‘som tam' and then mixed with grated unripe papaya and served as is or as a side dish to meat.
The owner of Som Tum Nong Rejoice, which serves the ridiculously spicy dish, said: ‘We have relocated to another district Soi Phahonyothin, in Bangkok because of the huge increase in customers we serve daily.
‘We are the only place that serves the salad this hot. We follow a strict rule that if it's not spicy, then we don't serve it.'
The restaurant became an instant hit when they offered an elevated version of the papaya salad with extremely spicy dressing.
Aside from som tam, the restaurant offers chicken feet soup, grilled pork, roasted chicken wings and other affordable menu dishes priced at an average of 100 baht (2.25 GBP) only.
Although not all Thai food is spicy, there is a cultural preference for it. Thais believe that the heat of chilli peppers helps to stimulate the appetite and digestion. It is also said to have medicinal properties, such as helping to reduce inflammation and boost the immune system.
