A wild elephant stopped cars and checked them for food.

The jumbo emerged from the forest and blocked traffic along a road in Prachuap Khiri Khan province, Thailand, on August 24.

Footage shows the animal inspecting an oil tanker, and when it seemed to have verified that it wasn't carrying anything edible, it was cleared to leave.

The elephant also approached two pickup trucks stuck in the jam and searched their cargo beds before being left alone.

As the animal headed towards other motorists, park rangers intervened and shot smoke canisters at the jumbo to scare it back to the jungle.

As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
