STORYLINE:

A pregnant woman, who suffered from a rare and fatal condition with a mortality of over 80 percent, was recently saved at a hospital in Nanning, south China's Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region.

The woman was being transferred to the delivery room when she showed symptoms of amniotic fluid embolism (AFE), a condition in which amniotic fluid enters the mother's bloodstream, triggering a fatal reaction.

She was immediately sent to the emergency room.

After nearly 27 hours of rescue by over 30 medical workers, the mother was out of danger.

"We have been racing against time to conduct rescue for nearly 27 hours. We never gave up. The patient had a strong will to live. We used an enormous amount of blood for the transfusion, equivalent to the blood volume of 17 healthy adults."

The woman's newborn baby was discharged from the hospital in a stable condition.
