Swellendam community marches over increased electricity tariffs
Cape Town, 30 August 2023: Hundreds of residents from the Railton community of Swellendam marched to the municipal offices. The residents are protesting the increased electricity tariffs and the cancellation of 50 free electricity units per month which was provided to indigent residents until July this year.
The march started at just after 8am and crossed over the N2 highway into the CBD of Swellendam. Mayor Francois Durant, surround by riot police, met the crowd outside his office, where leaders of the protest handed over a memorandum of demands. Last week the town’s municipal offices were torched by protesters.
Mayor Durant said he would respond to the memorandum of demands by 4 September.
