STORYLINE:

Egypt granted on Wednesday an 852-square-kilometer land in the southern province of Sohag for building a wind farm that can produce 3 gigawatts of electricity per day, in an attempt to bolster the country's green energy production.

The project will be carried out by a joint venture between Egypt's New and Renewable Energy Authority and the consortium partners -- Orascom Construction PLC, Toyota Tsusho Corporation, and French energy company ENGIE, according to a government statement.

The new wind farm is planned to supply clean energy for two million households and will contribute to reducing CO2 emissions by 6.5 million tons per year, said the statement.

The new project will provide 8,000 direct and indirect job opportunities, it added.

Egypt has adopted an ambitious plan to increase the supply of electricity generated from renewable sources to 42 percent by 2035, according to the statement.

The deal on the construction and operation of the wind farm was signed in November 2022 during the 27th Conference of the Parties of the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (COP27) held in Egypt's coastal city of Sharm El-Sheikh.
