Fifteen people were killed in a factory fire that broke out during heavy rain in the Philippines on Thursday morning.

The blaze rapidly engulfed the building in Tandang Sora village in Quezon City at around 5:30 am on August 31, trapping a family and several stay-in workers sleeping inside.

Firefighters responded to the emergency, but said they were initially given the wrong address. Heavy floods had also hampered them from reaching the area.

Officials said the fire was extinguished at 8:05 am.

Fifteen people, including the homeowner and a three-year-old girl, were killed.

In a statement, the Quezon City Fire District said: 'A total of 18 individuals were inside the residential area, only three of them were able to get out and 15 individuals were unable to escape.'

Authorities described the house as a 'fire trap' as it did not have enough exit points.

Barangay Tandang Sora Fire Brigade chief Marcelo Ragundiaz said the victims had been sleeping near the back of the factory's warehouse area, but were blocked from reaching the front door by a wall of flame in the middle of the house.

The fire had spread quickly due to flammable fabrics and chemicals stored inside.

The Quezon City local government said it will provide financial support for the bereaved families, but added they will conduct an investigation into the building's permits.

It said in a statement: 'We will find out if they violated the building code, fire code, if it has permits, and other laws.'
