Thousands of construction workers congregated in the underground parking lot of a stadium to seek shelter from the impending Typhoon Saola.

The video was filmed in the city of Shenzhen in Guangdong Province on August 31.

Ms Zhang, a vendor within the stadium, revealed that the government had requisitioned parts of the sports complex to serve as an emergency refuge.

The property management had previously informed that the stadium would be temporarily used as a typhoon emergency shelter. It was expected that around 8,000 workers from various nearby construction sites would come for safety.

She also added that all ventilation systems inside the parking lot had been activated, and numerous emergency restrooms had been set up. The on-site staff distributed essential supplies such as drinking water to the workers, and security personnel were on duty to ensure safety.

Mr Chen, a worker from a construction site located approximately one kilometre from the sports centre, was among those who sought refuge there. "Around 5:00 pm on August 31, all of us from the site gathered and came here," he said.

Chen and his colleagues spent the night in the underground parking lot and plan to remain there for the next few days until the typhoon has passed.

Reports from the refuge centre suggest that in addition to proper ventilation and drinking water, fans and emergency restrooms are available. There's also a police presence ensuring safety and order.
