STORYLINE:
A made-in-China monorail is making life more convenient in Bangkok, capital of Thailand.
The monorail "Yellow Line," manufactured by China's CRRC Puzhen Alstom Transportation Systems Limited and operated by Thai agencies, commenced commercial operations in July.
It spans 30.4 km to connect the north and the south parts of eastern Bangkok while intersecting with several intra-city rail lines.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Thai): SOMBAT, Commuter
"The ride was smooth. The train's interior was nice and spacious."
SOUNDBITE 2 (Thai): SURASAK VAIPANYA, Commuter
"I do not travel by train regularly, but I could feel that the monorail was quiet and smooth. I have used other trains before, and they were quite jerky. If the roads underneath are very congested, I think using the monorail is very convenient, particularly when it rains."
SOUNDBITE 3 (English): KAVIN KANJANAPAS, Executive director of Eastern Bangkok Monorail Company Limited (EBM)
"I think this is one of the biggest cooperations between China and Thailand because all the system is actually from China. It's a more flexible system. And in terms of investment, (it) is a little bit smaller. But I believe that this kind of train will actually help the Thai people, for the next generation to travel."
The straddle-type monorail can greatly alleviate traffic congestion as its elevated structure occupies less space.
The monorail system has also been fine-tuned to better cope with Bangkok's tropical weather and scorching heat.
