Fossil Free London protest mid way through Romeo and Juliet Ballet at Sadlers Wells Theatre.
Everyone was sat down for the half of the ballet and all the dancers were on stage in character, curtain up and just starting, when in the corner of my eye I saw a girl run down and duck under and hop onto the stage with a banner. Suddenly there were many others on stage with her. Due to the contemporary take on Romeo and Juliet and the fact it addressed hot current topics in the play e.g. knife crime, gender, trans , everyone was thought it may be part of it. It soon became clear it was not as the dancers were confused and went off stage and the orchestra were looking up not knowing what was going on. After speaking with them after, this has never happened before. It took quite a while for security to go on stage and usher them off, and as you can see in the video, they didn’t go easily. The audience after the initial confusing mainly grew angry and were shouting aggressively at the protestors, wanting them to leave so the show could go on. The protestors were chanting and protesting about Barclays being the sponsor of Sadlers wells and they fund new oil projects so they don’t want them to be linked with the arts. More protestors appeared in the crowds and started chanting from different corners of the theatre, with a photographer also there capturing it, clearly the photographers presence was planned. After eventually the protestors were escorted out, it took a while for the show to resume as they needed to clear and check the stage and clean it of anything dropped as this could be dangerous for the dancers in bare foot. A good 20 minutes later then planned, the second half started.
