Northeye to considered aa a closed 'secure' prison centre for asylum seekers who cross the English Channel illegally, Bexhill on Sea, East Sussex, UK
Northeye a former prison (and before that an RAF station for the Wartling Nuclear early warning system} may be re-purposed as a prison for migrants who cross the channel illegally. Huw Merriman, Conservative MP for Bexhill and Battle, said if the plans get the go ahead, Northeye would be a closed site. Mr Merriman told the BBC: "The passing of the Legal Migration Act makes it illegal for migrants to cross, and if they do they will have to go to a detained closed centre. We therefore need those detained closed centres because previously all those put forward across the country had been open. A Home Office spokesman told the BBC: "We are committed to the removal of foreign criminals and those with no right to be in the UK. The local community was anxious that large numbers of young males with no documentation would be housed a few yards from the local comunity.Northeye, Bexhill-on-Sea, East Sussex, UK
