Terrifying footage caught the intense moment a mako shark opened its jaws to bite at a GoPro attached to a diver in California.

Captain and Spearfishing Guide Austin Derry, 33, from San Diego, was filming the 100-pound shortfin mako for only a few minutes before it lashed out at his camera, only inches from his face.

Derry encountered the predator while diving in La Jolla, California outside the kelp forest on July 5th. He commented: “The ocean is always full of unexpected encounters like this one. Not knowing what to expect at any given time is the thrill that keeps bringing me back.

“I read the shark's body language and judge accordingly. It's not the size of the shark that necessarily matters, it's how they are acting.

“If their back is arched and pectoral fins are down, it's a sign this shark is agitated and it's time to get out of the water.

“When people see this footage they usually react like ‘Holy Sh*t’.”
