Handsome Turkish fitness trainer, 43, arrested over 'romance scam' targeting wealthy Thai women
A handsome Turkish fitness trainer has been arrested for allegedly scamming wealthy Thai women out of their life savings.
Suspected fraudster Onur Gungor, 43, reportedly used his good looks to charm and romance affluent Siamese single ladies who were desperate for a man in their lives.
When they had fallen in love, he would allegedly persuade them into investing in his car care business - but disappeared and severed all contact once he had obtained their money.
The brokenhearted victims, who later found that Onur's business was fake, filed a report with police, calling him a 'handsome casanova'. They claimed he had seduced them while they were his customers of his personal trainer service.
Officers traced him to the luxury Q Nouveau Residence in Soi Phibun Uppatham in Bangkok on September 4.
An armoured SWAT team led by Police Colonel Teerapas Yungyuen and Police Major Worapoj Lalitjirakul converged on the Turk's apartment to arrest him.
Police Major General Phutthidej Boonkrapue, commander of the Economic Crime Suppression Division, said the officers were serving an arrest warrant issued by the Phra Khanong Provincial Court on March 23, 2015.
Investigators also found that Ongur was a former soldier who switched careers to become a fitness trainer. His car care venture had already been sold 'a considerable time ago', they said.
Officers said women across different regions had filed complaints with police, with total damages amounting to 'millions of baht'.
Onur was remanded in police custody at the Udomsuk Police Station to face legal action. He has denied all charges against him.
