Mud heaven! Baby elephants roll themselves over in muddy watering hole
This is the adorable moment elephant calves rolled around in mud while playing at a wildlife sanctuary in Thailand.
Drone footage shows the baby animals frolicking in a watering hole at the sprawling Dong Yai Wildlife Sanctuary in Buriram province on August 13.
The calves had just finished eating in the field and decided to have a dip in the large puddle formed by recent heavy monsoon rain storms.
Forest rangers captured the cute scene with drone camera as the elephants huddled lay down next to each other and playfully rolled around in the muddy pool.
As of 2023, there are an estimated 3,084-3,500 wild elephants in Thailand. The population has been increasing in recent years, but it is still a fraction of the estimated 300,000 wild elephants that lived in Thailand at the beginning of the 20th century. The main threats to wild elephants in Thailand are habitat loss and fragmentation, poaching, and conflict with humans.
