A stowaway was arrested for jumping an airport fence and hiding in a plane's landing gear.

The man leaped over the perimeter barrier before charging toward the Airbus A320 as it taxied to the runway at the Mexico City International Airport (AICM) on September 3.

Footage shows how the intruder crammed himself into the compartment above the wheel in an apparent attempt to fly to Tijuana without a ticket with low-cost carrier Volaris for flight VOI876.

The pilot reportedly noticed the stowaway and 'took the necessary measures to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew on board', according to an airport spokesman.

They added: 'We are fully collaborating with the airport and civil aviation authorities in the investigation of this event, to prevent similar situations from occurring in the future.'

Authorities detained the man at the airport for questioning. The Navy and the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) said the suspect was 'placed at the disposal of the authorities for putting his life and that of the passengers at risk'.

They added in a statement: 'Thanks to the timely response of the aforementioned authorities and the airline itself, an event of greater implications could be prevented.'
