Visitors marveled over precious stones on show at a gem and jewellery fair in Bangkok, Thailand, this week as the country's exports rose.

Footage from the event shows the sought-after pieces at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Center in the Thai capital on September 6.

Organisers said the exhibition has been staged 68 times and is the 'longest celebrated' in Asia.

Sumed Prasongpongchai, head of the Gem and Jewelry Institute of Thailand (GIT), said the event has some 1,100 gem and jewellery merchants from around the world, occupying more than 2,400 booths.

Phusit Ratanakul Sereroengrit, Director-General of the Department of International Trade Promotion (DITP), claimed the export value of gems and jewelry has exceeded 4.34 billion USD in the first half of 2023 - an 11.94 per cent rise on the same period last year.

Neighbouring Myanmar, or Burma, is an important region for excavating precious stones, particularly jade. Many are moved to Thailand for polishing before reaching the international market.

The event runs until September 10.
