Monkey troop uses 'military-style' tactics to surround vehicles and demand food
A troop of monkeys executing what appeared to be a "military-style" formation, stopping vehicles in their tracks, seemingly demanding food in southern China.
The video was filmed in the city of Leshan in Sichuan Province on September 3.
According to a tourist named Mrs Tan, the first incident she witnessed was around 2:00 pm. She described seeing a red car, positioned in the opposite lane, being completely surrounded by the monkeys.
"These monkeys were strategically positioned all around the car as if they had planned their move," Mrs Tan explained. “While our car wasn’t encircled, we were halted by a monkey and had to reduce our speed. We proceeded only when the monkey in front decided to move.”
The monkey mischief didn’t end there. At around 5:00 pm, as Mrs Tan and her party were departing the scenic spot, they were met with a similar scene. This time, it was a white SUV, immobilised by the monkeys' coordinated efforts.
"We had to slowly manoeuvre our car through a small gap to get past," Tan elaborated. "As soon as I rolled down the window, one of the monkeys tried to intimidate me,” Tan recalled her visits to other scenic areas like Mount Emei, where she had seen many monkeys, but never before had she witnessed them exhibiting such tactical behaviour to halt tourists' vehicles.
Fortunately for her, her car was not detained, and she remains uncertain about how the white SUV eventually got free.
On September 4, a staff member from the Heizhugou scenic spot commented on the incident, stating that while the area is home to many monkeys, such orchestrated behaviour around tourists' vehicles isn't common.
He suggested that tourists feeding the monkeys might have prompted such actions. Following the events, staff members were dispatched to the scene to disperse the monkey troop.
The staff urges visitors not to feed the monkeys and to seek assistance from park personnel should they find themselves surrounded.
The video was provided by local media with permission.
