A family scrambled to flee their house when a magnitude 4.8 earthquake hit the southern Philippines on Wednesday afternoon.

CCTV footage shows the residents playing with a baby in a toddler playpen when the tremor struck Davao City, Davao del Sur province, on September 6 afternoon.

Mum Gabz Cheng scooped up the child and ran to safety in their yard.

State seismological agency PHIVOLCS said three earthquakes had struck the Davao region and neighbouring Cotabato province within an hour.

The strongest was a magnitude 4.8 quake that struck at 3:51 pm, 28 kilometres northwest of Davao City at a depth of 5 kilometres.

PHIVOLCS said no damage or aftershocks were expected.

The Philippines is an archipelago of more than 7,000 islands inside the Pacific 'Ring of Fire' where the majority of Earth's volcano eruptions and earthquakes happen.
