Climate activists on September 7 protested against the involvement of the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association (IPIECA) in the upcoming COP28.

Activists gathered at the entrance of IPIECA's offices near Moorgate station, central London.

A study from climate organisation One Earth claims: "The world's top fossil fuel companies owe at least $209bn in annual climate reparations to compensate communities most damaged by their polluting business and decades of lies."

Ipieca (previously the International Petroleum Industry Environmental Conservation Association) is the fossil fuel industry's main channel of communication with the UN. It goes to all climate change meetings.
Ipieca is 100% paid for by and composed of oil and gas companies.
ADNOC, the COP28 president's company, is a corporate member of Ipieca.
Ipieca claims to protect climate, nature, people and sustainability. Yet the truth is staggeringly different. A new study from One Earth* calculates that:
"The world's top fossil fuel companies owe at least $209n in annual climate reparations to compensate communities most damaged by their polluting business and decades of lies."
Instead, Global South countries are paying billions of dollars in debt repayments to the countries responsible for the climate emergency.
We cannot trust oil and gas companies like ADNOC to put life before profit. People in the Global South are owed immense payments for the catastrophic loss and damage in their communities caused by drought, hunger, floods, landslides, and fires.
In the Global North, including the UK, extreme weather is increasingly putting lives at risk and raising food prices.
We need to control the fossil fuel companies, not the other way around.
