STORYLINE:

Sanya, a resort city on China's tropical island of Hainan, has replaced air conditioners with a centralized supply of cold water in several high-end hotels and duty-free shops, raising new prospects for a greener solution.

The district cooling system produces and sends out chilled water from a central source to cool multiple buildings in an area.

This kind of system enjoys economies of scale and optimized central management, making it much more energy-efficient than individual air conditioners.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): FANG BO, General Manager of EDF Changfeng (Sanya) Energy Co., Ltd.
"The district cooling network can save the installed capacity of cooling systems in public buildings by sharing a centralized supply of cold water. So the electric load in the area is correspondingly reduced. In addition, the system produces ice at night when the demand for electricity is relatively low and sends out cold water during the day. In other words, the system can reduce the electricity consumption during peak hours."

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): LIU GUOYANG, Secretary-general of Hainan's Hotel Engineering Association
"Seven hotels in Haitang Bay, Sanya, have started using the district cooling system. Each hotel can save 10-15 percent in energy cost."

Launched in 2021, the Sanya system is capable of saving about 28,000 tonnes of standard coal and reducing 76,000 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions every year when running at full tilt, according to the supplier.
