Four 1,900-year-old Roman swords found in a cave in Jerusalem, Israel
This footage was filmed and produced 6 September 2023.
Archaeologists found four Roman swords and a polearm known as a pilum dating back 1,900 years in a cave near Israel's Dead Sea coast.
The rare find occurred in the En Gedi Nature Reserve where they were found preserved in wooden and leather sheaths, according to an Israel Antiquities Authority press release issued Wednesday.
The weapons were probably spoils of war seized from the Roman army by Judean rebels, according to the authors of a research paper published Wednesday in the book "New Studies in the Archaeology of the Judean Desert: Collected Papers."
This vidoe illustrates various shots of Israel Antiquities Authority (IAA) worker showing the swords at the Israel National Campus for Archaeology
