Australian Wood Ducks (Chenonetta jubata) are very protective of their young. One of the threats that their ducklings face is from Australasian Swamphens (Porphyrio melanotus bellus), beautiful, large waterbirds that will kill and eat small animals if they can. This pair of Australian Wood Ducks was grazing with their six cute ducklings on the edge of Herdsman Lake in Perth when an Australasian Swamphen came too close for comfort. The male Wood Duck charged the Swamphen twice, successfully driving it away before returning to his family to graze on the lawn by the lake.
