A resident stranded in floods clung to a tree for 14 hours before he was finally rescued by authorities in Thailand.

Thongchai Prakorbsang, 39, was driving home on his motorcycle after working at a rice field when a flash flood surged on the road and left him stranded at around 6:30 pm in Kuchinarai town, Kalasin province, on September 6.

The two-wheeler was submerged in the water, while terrified Thongchai clung desperately onto a tree to anchor himself against the strong current.

He spent the entire night holding onto the tree for safety before residents finally spotted him and alerted a rescue crew at 8 a.m. on September 7.

Footage shows the volunteers, along with Kuchinarai mayor Thanaset Chaisongkramthanatat, paddling toward the stranded man as he stood shivering in the waist-deep deluge. They handed him a life vest, then hauled him onto the boat to be brought back to dry land.

Thongchai said: 'It was terrible. I was stuck there for 14 hours crying for help, but no one could hear me. I thought I was going to die.

'When they found me I was so relieved. I am so thankful to them.'

Authorities said several areas across Kalasin experienced flooding due to continuous rainfall, particularly in areas near Phu Phan Mountain, where flash floods hit swathes of agricultural land.

Four districts have been affected by the flooding, which submerged rice fields and roads in the area, officials said.

Thailand and neighbouring countries in Southeast Asia are in their annual monsoon rainy season which sees soaring temperatures followed by powerful rain storms in the afternoon leading to widespread flash floods.
