An Argentinian man died in a horror crash when he drove the wrong way on a Thai road and caused a crash with multiple cars.

Noguera Mariano, 46, reportedly went on on a rampage and smashed his white Subaru sedan into a car repair shop, shocking pedestrians in Chonburi province on September 8.

He climbed out of his car in a 'crazed and drunken state', crossed the street to a barbecue restaurant then tried to steal a knife from the kitchen before being driven away by the staff.

The locals saw the shirtless driver returning to his vehicle - only to speed away on the wrong lane and trigger a deadly multiple crash.

Police Captain Kultawat Ruamjit from the Mueang Chonburi Police Station arrived with police officers and medics at the scene, where they found the severely injured Argentinian man unconscious inside the overturned sedan.

They pulled him out of the wreckage and rushed him to the Chonburi Hospital, but he succumbed to his injuries. Four other vehicles were damaged in the crash.

Cops found an Isuzu Mu-7 car with a crushed front, with the driver Colonel Piyachart Yajinda and an injured 4-year-old boy inside. Piyachart said Noguera had struck another car, sending it crashing into his vehicle.

Officers also rescued Nataya Nawinprasert, 67, whose Honda Scoopy motorcycle was hit by a car that swerved into her path.

A badly damaged Isuzu D-max pick-up truck and a Suzuki Swift sedan with a dented rear door were found. The Suzuki Swift's unnamed driver has been taken to the hospital.

Police Captain Kultawat said: 'We will be reviewing CCTV footage in the area to gather evidence for the legal proceedings. The Argentinian embassy will also be contacted to inform the dead man's relatives of the accident.'

Thailand has one of the world's worst road safety records. Ministers have set the goal of reducing fatalities from 32.7 deaths per 100,000 people to 12 per 100,000 people by the year 2027.

However, a lack of road safety education in schools along with notoriously easy driving tests, police failures to enforce road laws, and chronic under-investment in infrastructure, all appear to hamper the efforts.
