An international academic seminar on the global significance of Dunhuang Studies has brought world experts to Dunhuang city in northwest China's Gansu province.

SOUNDBITE 1 (Chinese): ZHANG YUANLIN, Deputy Director of Dunhuang Academy
"Dunhuang culture, nurtured in the rich soil of traditional Chinese culture, is a result of infusion with other foreign cultures such as Indian Buddhism. As a result, Dunhuang Studies has an international feature. Today, we are studying Dunhuang Studies under the Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). We aim to further excavate and organize the history of dialogue and exchange between the Chinese nation and other different ethnic groups along the routes of ancient Silk Road. This will help us build consensus, enhance friendship, deepen mutual understanding, and jointly promote the BRI for mutual benefit and win-win results."

The experts and scholars presented their recent research on Dunhuang Studies and conducted in-depth discussion on the global significance promoted by Dunhuang Studies.

SOUNDBITE 2 (Chinese): RONG XINJIANG, Professor at Peking University
"Dunhuang Studies is an international discipline. It requires the use of international languages and concepts for dialogue. I believe that such a seminar will definitely promote the development of Dunhuang Studies."

SOUNDBITE 3 (English): NEIL SCHMID, Researcher at Dunhuang Academy
"So many cultures came together in Dunhuang over a thousand years and we see that there's a kind of harmony in the caves where all these cultures in a single cave are depicted on the wall. There's a kind of harmony and it's not some zero-sum perception of cultures and cultural interaction."
