This is the nerve-racking moment a frantic father removed a giant tick that had latched onto his son's eyelid in Malaysia.

Dad Mohd Aqil Hakimi was alarmed when he found the large insect stuck in the boy Afiq's eye at their home in Kedah.

The parasite, which looked like a large papaya seed, had grown plump from sucking on Afiq's blood, and had attached itself at the base of his eyelashes, causing severe discomfort.

Mohd set about preparing a DIY treatment and sterilised a pair of tweezers to get rid of the massive bug.

Mohd drizzled what appeared to be an orange oil onto Afiq's eye to loosen the tick's grip. He then took the tweezers to the youngster's eye, with the boy wailing as his father plucked the pest from his eyelid.

As the tick had grown quite large, it was quickly removed within a few minutes. Mohd crushed it under a plastic bottle to keep it from escaping.

The relieved father applied some disinfectant onto Afiq's swollen eyelid as the youngster finally calmed down.

Mohd said: 'Afiq likes to play with animals a lot. The tick probably latched onto him while he was playing with them.'

In 2021, a 13-year-old Thai girl was rushed to a hospital when a tick burrowed into her eyelid. The tick, believed to be from the family's pet dog, had been embedded in her eye for several days before it was found.

Ticks can transmit numerous diseases, notably Lyme disease which can cause fever, headache, and fatigue. In severe cases, the illness can affect the heart and nervous system.
