A girls’ trip to Liverpool, UK, descended into hilarity after pals set up a 60th birthday surprise - a year early.

Sally Anne Ashford, 59, is captured on video looking hilariously bemused and erupting into fits of giggles when her long-standing friends set up a surprise at the Mercure Hotel.

With bubbly on ice, a tiara and "60 and fabulous" banners laid out in the bed, the trio had hoped that Sally would have a landmark birthday to remember - only for their mate to point out she had in fact just turned 59.

But when Sally enters the room her reaction is priceless, and the girls can’t believe their ears when she says: “Whose is that? Me? That’s not until next year!”

The room then erupts as the ladies laugh about the mistake, with infectious laughter catching on as the realisation sets in.

Carmen Atherton, 61, Ali Thomas, 58 and Elizabeth, 49 set up the surprise during a girls’ weekend to the city.

Sally, an administrator from Great Wyrley, South Staffs, posted the hilarious moment on TikTok, and the friends couldn't believe it when it racked up a whopping 1 million views.

"It was even more hilarious because Elizabeth is 50 next year and I am 60 and we have had that conversation,” she said. “They called me into the room to have a drink before we all went out, and there it all was. It was so funny we couldn't stop laughing.

"I'm not really one for social media, and we only put it on there for a joke, but I can see why people like the video because it's such a funny, genuine moment. All the lads I work with have been in hysterics about it."

The four friends met at their local Slimming World group ten years ago, and every year have a weekend trip to a different location.

As part of their trip to Liverpool, they rode on the Mersey Ferry, took the Beatles Magical Mystery Tour and visited the artisan market at the Albert Docks.

But for the friends, this particular trip will be forever synonymous with the hilarious birthday mistake.

Sally added: "I enjoyed every second of the Liverpool trip, I've never been before. But that moment in the hotel room is something that we will never forget, so funny, and at least I know what to expect next year."
