STORYLINE:
Racing against time, a five-member beach volleyball team from Gaza has been busy training for the 19th Asian Games in China's Hangzhou.
The team, including four athletes and a coach, told Xinhua they spend eight hours a day in order to be able to challenge their competitors in China.
Gaza-based player Abdullah Al-Arqan started to play volleyball when he was six years old as he used to attend matches with his father, who was the famous volleyball player in Gaza.
However, Al-Arqan's path to competing was not smooth, as he was physically very thin.
Moreover, the instable political and economic situation in the Gaza Strip, home to more than 2.3 million people, also dampened his spirits.
SOUNDBITE 1 (Arabic): ABDULLAH AL-ARQAN, Gaza-based beach volleyball player
"Of course, I aspire that our participation will not be ordinary participation, especially since my father is the coach, and our participation will be like that occupied Palestine is present everywhere and is able to have its place in the world through sports."
Al-Arqan represented Palestine in Arab tournaments and succeeded in taking bronze medals in two competitions held in Qatar in 2022 and 2023.
SOUNDBITE 2 (Arabic): MOHAMMED AL-QISHAWI, Gaza-based beach volleyball player
"As Palestinian youth, we are happy to participate in this tournament, especially since Palestine is capable of achieving championships, as we did in Qatar, and we hope to win a new title and victory for Palestine."
The 19th Asian Games will take place from September 23 to October 8 in Hangzhou, China's Zhejiang Province, and will see approximately 12,000 athletes from 45 countries and regions.
